Industrial adhesives and sealants is a category defined by chemical diversity rather than a shared specification — solvent-based contact adhesives, two-component epoxy and polyurethane structural adhesives, single-component silicone and polyurethane sealants, and cyanoacrylate (“instant”) adhesives are all sold through the same commercial channels but have almost nothing in common at the hazard-assessment level. A solvent-based contact adhesive is fundamentally a flammable-liquid compliance problem, similar in profile to an industrial solvent. Labeling Requirements

Each component of a multi-part system must carry its own GHS pictograms and hazard statements appropriate to its actual chemistry — flammable-liquid labeling for solvent-based products, sensitizer labeling for isocyanate-containing polyurethanes, and corrosive or irritant labeling where the hardener component of an epoxy system warrants it. Mixing ratios, working (open) time, and full cure time must be stated clearly enough to be usable on a job site rather than buried in a separate technical bulletin, and ventilation warnings are expected wherever solvent or isocyanate exposure is a realistic handling risk. Batch or lot number, shelf life, and a clear “for industrial use only” restriction where the product isn’t formulated or tested for consumer/DIY handling round out the required label content. For moisture- or temperature-sensitive chemistries, the label or accompanying documentation should also specify the storage conditions the product needs to maintain its stated shelf life, since a generic “store in a cool dry place” instruction is rarely precise enough to protect a moisture-cure system through an extended tropical transit.

Typical Gaps We Find

Missing isocyanate hazard labeling on polyurethane sealants is the second consistent finding, usually because the product is marketed and packaged as a general-purpose sealant with no chemistry-specific hazard review behind the label copy. Absent flash point data and UN classification on solvent-based contact adhesives rounds out the pattern, mirroring almost exactly the gap we see on the standalone-solvent side of the paints and solvents category — the underlying lesson in both cases is that a product’s commercial name rarely tells you what regulatory category its actual chemistry belongs to. Storage-and-transit degradation of moisture- or heat-sensitive adhesive chemistries is a fourth, quieter finding — it doesn’t show up as a customs hold, but as a buyer complaint weeks after delivery, once a cartridge that looked fine on arrival turns out to have already lost the working time or bond strength its data sheet promised.
