Labeling Requirements
The on-pack label must reproduce the PCPB-approved label text, including the PCPB registration number, essentially verbatim — this is one of the few categories where creative marketing copy is itself a compliance risk rather than a stylistic choice. Required elements include the registered product name, active ingredient and concentration, formulation type, target crop and pest as approved, application rate and pre-harvest interval, re-entry interval, the GHS hazard pictograms and signal word matching the product’s WHO toxicity classification (Class Ia/Ib extremely or highly hazardous through Class III slightly hazardous), first-aid and antidote information, and storage/disposal instructions, all in English and/or Kiswahili. A label that is technically accurate about the chemistry but omits the registration number or restates claims differently from the approved label text is treated as non-compliant on its own.

Typical Gaps We Find
Unregistered products and importers who skip the PCPB process entirely account for the most severe outcomes we see in this category — not a delay, but an outright refusal of entry, because there is no conformity fix available for a product that was never approved in the first place. Among registered products, the most frequent defect is a label that was copy-pasted from the country of origin’s packaging rather than reproducing the specific PCPB-approved Kenyan label text, which creates a mismatch even when the underlying chemistry is fully compliant. The third consistent gap is a hazard classification and signal word that doesn’t match the product’s actual WHO toxicity class — often understated relative to what independent testing shows — which is exactly the kind of discrepancy a pre-shipment assessment is built to catch before a consignment reaches the port and triggers a formal PCPB compliance review rather than a routine customs check. Cross-border traders sourcing CRMs or repackaging product intended for a neighboring market’s registration add a further, entirely avoidable layer of risk on top of these three, since a formulation approved in Kampala or Dar es Salaam carries no weight with PCPB until it has been through Kenya’s own registration process from scratch.
