Tiles arrive in Kenya by the container-load from China, India, Spain, and Italy, and the compliance question that actually matters is rarely “is this tile good quality” in a vague sense — it’s whether the specific water-absorption group printed or implied on the carton (porcelain versus standard ceramic, floor-rated versus wall-only) matches what the tile actually does under laboratory testing. KS ISO 13006 classifies tiles into groups — BIa, BIb, BIIa, BIIb, BIII — purely on the basis of measured water absorption, and that single number determines whether a tile is genuinely suitable for exterior, wet-area, or heavy-foot-traffic use, or whether it’s a wall-only product being sold into an application it will fail in within a year or two. A tile can look, feel, and even sound identical to a genuine porcelain body while absorbing several times more water than its labeled group permits. The category has also grown more complex with the rise of large-format and rectified tiles (tiles mechanically ground to a precise, near-zero-tolerance edge for minimal grout lines), which raise the bar on rectitude and flatness testing well beyond what older pressed-edge tile formats required, and which are far less forgiving of the dimensional defects described below once installed.

Labeling Requirements

Cartons must show tile dimensions (work size) and thickness, the water-absorption group, PEI abrasion class where floor use is claimed, and a shade/calibre and tone batch number — critical because tiles from different production runs must not be mixed on a single floor without the installer knowing. Cartons must also declare first-quality grading explicitly, since second-quality (commercial-grade) stock with a higher defect allowance is commonly relabeled and sold without disclosure, plus country of origin and importer/distributor details. Where a tile is marketed as rectified (mechanically ground to a precise edge for minimal grout joints), the carton should say so explicitly, since rectified and non-rectified tiles from the same design range are frequently packed and priced differently but look identical until an installer tries to lay them at the joint width the design assumed.

Typical Gaps We Find

Water-absorption mismatches — porcelain claims that don’t hold up under actual testing — are the defect we treat most seriously, since durability problems don’t appear until months after installation, by which point the tile is grouted, sealed, and effectively irreversible to replace. Shade and batch inconsistency within a single container is the single most frequent complaint we hear from installers, almost always traced to a supplier consolidating multiple production runs into one shipment without disclosure. We also regularly find second-quality tile shipped without the grading disclosure required to distinguish it from first-quality stock at the same price point, which is a straightforward documentation fix but one that catches buyers who assumed “the tile in the sample book” was the tile in the container. Slip-resistance documentation for floor tiles marketed into wet or commercial-traffic areas is missing more often than not, largely because it’s rarely asked for at point of sale — until a liability question comes up after an installation, at which point there’s usually no test report to point to either way.
