Labeling Requirements

The label must show the product name and description including grade (such as Broken Pekoe or Dust) or blend description, net weight, batch or lot code, manufacture/packing and best-before dates, the origin or estate/garden reference where a single-origin claim is made, storage instructions, and country of origin, in English and/or Kiswahili. Any single-estate or single-garden claim requires supporting traceability documentation on file, not just on the label. Where a product is a blend of multiple gardens or origins, this should be disclosed rather than implied to be single-origin through packaging design alone.

Typical Gaps We Find

The most common real defect we see is not a Kenyan compliance failure at all — it is tea that passes every domestic and EAC test cleanly but fails against the tighter pesticide MRLs of its actual destination market, because the exporter tested against the wrong reference standard from the start rather than the buyer’s specific requirements. The second most common issue is moisture content that is borderline at the point of packing — it does not fail the test on the day, but leaves too little margin for the moisture pickup that inevitably happens over weeks of container transit. Both are fixed by testing against the correct destination standard up front and building in a real moisture safety margin, not by changing anything about how the tea itself is grown or processed.

Blend-lineage gaps are the third issue we flag with increasing frequency as packers combine more auction lots into single retail products to manage cost and supply consistency — the fix is procedural rather than technical, requiring packers to retain and carry forward each component lot’s test results rather than relying solely on a single test of the finished blend. Given Kenya’s position as the world’s largest black tea exporter, the bar for traceability that buyers expect from this category is genuinely higher than for most other food products on this platform, and our assessment reflects that. Heavy metal contamination, while less frequent than the pesticide and moisture issues above, is the fourth check we run rigorously precisely because it has no visible or organoleptic signature at all — a contaminated lot tastes, smells, and brews exactly like a clean one, which makes independent lab verification the only real safeguard.
